Past Projects

Fort William Rotary Club has been successful in two previous international projects.

In 2004 - 2005 our club co-sponsored an Eye Hospital in Calcutta, India.  The club contributed USD 5,000 and completed the project with a matching grant from D5580.  The total cost of the project was USD 28,500.

In 2008 - 2009 our club co-sponsored a project providing Sweet Water to about 50,000 people in rural India.  The total cost of the project is expected to be USD 17,500.  The Fort William Rotary Club contributed USD 3,000 and with help from TRF Matching Grant it is nearing completion.

Current Pending Project

We are currently in the developement stages of a rehabilitation project for Regent Rural  Primary School in Sierra Leone.  The Fort William Rotary Club has agreed to co-sponsor this very worthwhile project and is looking for your generous support.  The project has received endorsement from our District Governor Ajoy Chatterjee.  You do not have to contribute a lot, whatever your club can afford toward this worthy cause would be very much appreciated.  We need to raise USD 60,000, as our portion, to make this project a reality.

Regent is situated in the heart of the five mountain villages and has potential growth as its periphery has become very attractive to people who are trying to move away from the already congested city of Freetown.  It is seven miles from the city centre.  Being mountainous it experiences very heavy rainfall, fresh breezes and lush green vegetation.  It supplies Freetown with fresh fruits and vegetables.

ChildrenRegent Village, was founded in 1812 for the resettlement of freed slaves.  Today Regent is a melting pot with a population of about five thousand.  The main livelihood is agriculture/vegetable gardening.

The Regent Rural Primary School was founded by the Church Missionary Society of England in 1816.  it has a student population of about 450.  English is the medium of communication in the school. There are fifteen teachers.  The condition of the school building is in a state of disrepair.  The roof is leaking copiously; teaching and learning materials are easily damaged.  Themain building

school building has not been refurbished for over twenty years and things are going from bad to worse.  The desks and chairs need to be replaced.

THE MAIN BUILDING:  Needs to be painted, floors need to be done, new windows.  C.I. Sheets need to be replaced (roofing), doors and the entire electrical system needs to be done.

TOILET BUILDING:  There is no proper toilet facilities.  The pupils have to use the bush.

THE NEW HOME ECONOMIC CENTRE:  This has to be built from the ground up.  With this centre the teacher will use it as a teaching centre for computing, arts & crafts, cooking and dress making.  The resource centre is a must in this age of globalization.classroom ceiling

WATER SUPPIES:  There is a need for a reliable water supply to the school.

Supporting this project will be taking Regent Rural Primary School from its present predicament into the twenty-first century.
