The Sustaining Member title is one of the ways that the Rotary Foundation recognizes Rotarians and friends for their generous support.
You can pledge to become a Sustaining Member by contributing $100US every year.
When you donate money to the foundation, you are asked if you want to put the money towards:
1. Polio Plus
2. The Annual Fund
3. The Permanent Fund
Money given to Polio Plus is put to use for polio eradication and also triggers the release of matching funds from the Gates Foundation.
Money given to the Annual Fund is held by the Foundation for three years and they use the interest earned over those three years to help pay for Foundation admin and operating expenses. After three years, the principle is then used up for the many different humanitarian and educational programs of the Foundation.
Money given to the Permanent Fund remains with the Foundation in perpetuity (like an endowment fund) and only the interest earned each year goes to support the Foundation and its many programs. Donors to the Permanent Fund tend to come in the form of bequests, etc. and are usually larger one-time gifts from Rotarians.
You can also have your money shared between Polio Plus and the Annual Fund.
Go to the rotary site and check to see where your money is going. If you would like to re-direct your money to another fund, you simply send an email to email@example.com give them your name, your Rotary ID number and the amount you donated and when it was made and name the fund you would like the money to be put in.
Several Rotarians have given annually to the Annual Fund in response to the "Every Rotarian Every Year" Challenge and those who sign on to pledge/give $100. US per year are considered to be “Sustaining” donors. Signing on helps the Rotary Foundation predicts the amount of money it may receive each year... for future planning.
